Introduction

Ugadi is the Telugu New Year, celebrated with joy across Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, and by Telugu families everywhere. It falls on Chaitra Shukla Pratipada – the first day of the bright fortnight of the month of Chaitra – when spring is in full bloom, mango trees are heavy with young fruit and neem trees are covered in flowers. The name comes from yuga (age) and adi (beginning): the start of a new era. Each new year also receives its own name from the traditional cycle of sixty samvatsaras. The same day is celebrated as Yugadi in Karnataka and as Gudi Padwa in Maharashtra.

Significance and Legend

According to tradition, Lord Brahma began the creation of the universe on Chaitra Shukla Pratipada, which is why this day is honoured as the first day of time itself. For devotees it is a day to begin afresh – to pray for a year of health, harmony and prosperity, and to accept with an even mind whatever the year may bring. Ugadi also opens the holy fortnight of Chaitra, which leads up to Sri Rama Navami.

How it is Celebrated in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana

  • Early start: the day begins before sunrise with an oil bath (abhyanga snanam) and new clothes.
  • Decorating the home: doorways are adorned with toranams of fresh mango leaves, and colourful muggulu (rangoli) are drawn at the entrance.
  • Ugadi pachadi: the first thing eaten on Ugadi is the special pachadi of six tastes, shared by the whole family.
  • Temple visits: families visit temples to seek blessings for the new year.
  • Panchanga Shravanam: in the evening, people gather in temples, community halls and homes to hear the new year's Panchangam read aloud.
  • Kavi sammelanams: poets' gatherings with Ugadi poems are a much-loved cultural tradition in the Telugu states.

Ugadi Pachadi – the Six Tastes

Ugadi pachadi blends the six tastes (shadruchulu). Its message is that life brings every kind of experience, and all should be received with balance. The tastes are commonly explained like this:

  • Neem flowers – bitterness: sorrow and hardship
  • Jaggery – sweetness: happiness
  • Tamarind – sourness: difficult or unpleasant moments
  • Raw mango – tanginess: new experiences and surprises
  • Green chilli or pepper – heat: anger and testing times
  • Salt – saltiness: the zest and interest of life

Rituals and Puja

  • After the bath, the family worships its ishta devata (chosen deity) and offers the Ugadi pachadi as the first naivedyam.
  • The new year's Panchangam is placed before the deity and worshipped before it is used.
  • Panchanga Shravanam – listening to the Panchangam – is considered meritorious. A learned priest announces the name of the new year and explains its forecasts, such as rainfall, harvests and the year's rasi phalalu, including aadayam–vyayam (income and expenditure) and rajapujyam–avamanam (honour and setbacks) for each rasi.
  • Elders bless the younger members of the family, and new ventures are often begun on this auspicious day.

Foods and Offerings

  • Ugadi pachadi – the essential offering of the day.
  • Bobbatlu – sweet flatbreads stuffed with chana dal and jaggery, also known as bakshalu or polelu in Telangana.
  • Pulihora (tamarind rice) and payasam, along with a festive meal shared with family and friends.

Temples Known for this Festival

  • Sri Bhramaramba Mallikarjuna Swamy Temple, Srisailam – the Ugadi Brahmotsavams are among the biggest festivals of the year. Lakhs of devotees from Karnataka walk through the Nallamala hills to reach Srisailam, and lovingly offer gifts to Goddess Bhramaramba, whom they regard as their own daughter.

The next Ugadi date is shown in the festival dates above. Ugadi always falls on Chaitra Shukla Pratipada as per the Telugu panchang.
