About the Temple
Introduction
Sri Tirupathamma Ammavari Devasthanam in Penuganchiprolu, NTR district, Andhra Pradesh, is one of the most beloved village-goddess shrines of the Telugu lands. Penuganchiprolu lies about 71 km from Vijayawada and 50 km from Khammam, close to the Telangana border, and the town is known everywhere as the home of Tirupathamma Talli. Devotees from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana come here throughout the year, and in very large numbers during the annual Tirunallu festivals. The temple is administered by the Andhra Pradesh Endowments Department.
The Goddess
The presiding deity is Sri Tirupathamma Ammavaru, worshipped together with her husband Sri Gopayya Swamy. Devotees see Tirupathamma as a loving, protective mother of the village and of all who seek her help. Families pray to her for the health of their children, for harmony in the home, for good harvests and for the well-being of their cattle, and return to fulfil their vows once their prayers are answered.
The Story of Tirupathamma
According to local tradition, Tirupathamma was born as a blessing of Lord Venkateswara of Tirumala, and for this reason she was named after the Lord of Tirupati. From childhood she was deeply devoted to the Lord. She was married to Gopayya of Penuganchiprolu and lived a life of devotion and dharma.
Tradition says that after Gopayya's death, Tirupathamma chose to follow her husband, and that her extraordinary devotion led the people of the region to honour her as a perantalu – a woman revered as divine. A shrine was raised in her memory, and over generations it grew into the great temple of today. Her life is remembered by devotees as an example of faith, devotion and steadfastness.
Mahima / Significance
For the people of the Krishna and Khammam regions, Tirupathamma is a household goddess (kuladevata) for many families. Devotees believe that sincere prayers offered here are answered, and the temple is especially popular for vows related to children, marriage and family welfare. Many devotees first offer their prayers at the temple before major family events.
The town also has a deep bond with Lord Venkateswara because of Tirupathamma's devotion to him, and devotees often visit the Venkateswara shrines of Penuganchiprolu along with the Ammavari temple.
