Sri Ujjaini Mahakali Devasthanam is one of the most revered Mahakali temples in Secunderabad, Telangana. Origin and History

The temple's popular history is linked with a severe epidemic in the early 19th century. Tradition says that around 1813, when cholera affected the twin cities, military men from Secunderabad who were stationed near Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh prayed to Mahakali for protection. Suriti Appaiah, remembered as a doli bearer, and his associates vowed that if the people were saved, they would install the goddess in Secunderabad. After returning, they established the deity, and the shrine gradually became the present Sri Ujjaini Mahakali Devasthanam.

This history gives the temple a strong meaning: the goddess is worshipped not only as a deity of power but also as a guardian who protects the community during crisis. Over two centuries, the shrine has grown into one of Telangana's iconic Mahakali temples and a major centre of Bonalu devotion.

Presiding Deity

During Ashada Masam, women carry Bonam, a sacred food offering prepared with rice, milk and jaggery in a decorated pot with neem leaves, turmeric, vermilion and a lamp. At Ujjaini Mahakali Temple, lakhs of devotees gather for the Ashada Jathara, and the area becomes vibrant with drums, processions, Pothuraju dances, folk devotion and community offerings to the Mother Goddess.
