About the Temple
Introduction
Sri Varijala Venugopala Swami Devalayam is a hilltop shrine of Lord Krishna near Gopalayapally village in Narketpally mandal, Nalgonda district, Telangana. The temple stands on a large hillock (pedda gutta) about 1 km from the village, a short drive off the Hyderabad–Vijayawada highway between Narketpally and Chityala. Its quiet setting and wide views over the surrounding countryside make it a peaceful stop for devotees travelling on the highway as well as for families from Nalgonda and Hyderabad.
Main Deity and Worship
The presiding deity is Sri Venugopala Swamy – Lord Krishna as the divine cowherd playing his flute (venu), a form of Lord Vishnu. This form of the Lord is loved for the joy and peace his music brings, and devotees pray to him for happiness in the family, for children and for relief from worries. Daily pujas and archanas are performed for the Lord.
History
A detailed history of the temple – when it was founded and by whom – is not widely published. It is known locally as a hill temple that has grown in popularity in recent years, drawing devotees from Nalgonda, Hyderabad and towns along the highway.
