About the Temple

Introduction

Sri Chilkur Balaji Temple at Chilkur village, in Moinabad mandal of Ranga Reddy district, is one of the oldest and most beloved temples around Hyderabad. It stands on the banks of the Osman Sagar (Gandipet) lake, about 25 km from the city. Lord Venkateswara is worshipped here as Sri Balaji, and the temple is famous across India – and among Indians abroad – as the "Visa Balaji", because so many devotees come to pray for success with their visas and journeys overseas.

Main Deity

The presiding deity is Sri Venkateswara Swamy (Balaji), believed to be self-manifested (Swayambhu). A special feature of the idol is that the Lord appears together with his consorts Sri Devi and Bhu Devi in a single form, which is rare among Venkateswara shrines. A shrine of Goddess Rajya Lakshmi is also part of the temple.

Sthala Puranam (Legend)

According to tradition, a devotee who had visited Tirumala every year without fail fell seriously ill and was unable to make his yearly pilgrimage. Heartbroken, he prayed to the Lord. That night Lord Venkateswara appeared in his dream and told him, "I am right here in the nearby forest – you need not travel far to see me." The devotee went to the place shown in the dream and found an anthill. While the anthill was being dug, the axe accidentally struck the hidden idol and blood began to flow from it. When the devotee bathed the idol with milk, as he was guided to do, the Lord was revealed together with Sri Devi and Bhu Devi. A temple was built on that spot, and it is believed to be several centuries old.

The Visa Balaji and the Pradakshina Vow

Chilkur Balaji is famous for its simple and heartfelt vow of pradakshinas (walking around the sanctum). Devotees who have a wish – whether for a visa, a job, studies, marriage, health or any other need – make 11 pradakshinas while praying to the Lord. Once their wish is fulfilled, they return to complete 108 pradakshinas as thanksgiving. Thousands of people take this vow every week, which is why the temple became widely known as the Visa Balaji – but devotees come with every kind of prayer.

A Temple Without Hundi or Paid Darshan

Chilkur Balaji is admired for a rare principle: there is no hundi (donation box) and no paid or VIP darshan. Every devotee, whoever they may be, stands in the same line and receives the same darshan. The temple does not accept money offerings from devotees in the usual way, and its custodians have long maintained this practice as an example of devotion without commerce. For many visitors, this simplicity is a large part of what makes the temple special.

Festivals

  • Annual Brahmotsavams: the temple's main festival, celebrated over several days with special pujas and processions of the Lord.
  • Vaikuntha Ekadasi (December–January): one of the busiest days of the year, when very large numbers of devotees come for darshan.
  • Weekends and holidays: the temple is crowded on weekends, especially with students and families taking or fulfilling the pradakshina vow.

Temple Timings

  • The temple is generally open from early morning until evening.
  • Timings change on festival days, and crowds can be very heavy on weekends. Please check locally before your visit.
